For 16 years, John Livzey has given our Fortune 500 firm the most extraordinary library of cover stories and marketing materials through the artistry of his work. When we gear up for megaproject pursuits, he is part of the superior panoply of resources we bring to the effort. It was a pleasure to see "Cruising for Snaps" after so many years of encouraging him to memorialize his photography in book form. And this - a series of glimpses into the small moments of life, some whimsical, some awe-inspiring - gives us a glimpse of the breathless, unexpected, gorgeous, and sometimes irreverent genius of his work. This book has jumped to the top of my lists of gifts for very special people.
John Livzey's "Cruising For Snaps" has to be one of the cleverest concepts for a photo book I've seen in a long while. Every image being displayed was taken from a vehicle of some sort and they encompass what could be called character studies, social and political statements and some have to qualify as a surreal and/or abstract look at things we see in our everyday lives. And just like real life some are amusing, some are mysterious and some are all of the above as well as downright beautiful. But they all covey a sense of the wit and observational aptitude of the man behind the lens. His images have stayed in my mind and even inspired me to take a look at his website ([...]) which revealed yet another treasure-trove of photos including the work he's done for National Geographic, Time Magazine and many others. And if you're a music fan you're unlikely to be disappointed to find images of everyone from John Lee Hooker to Emmylou Harris to Frank Zappa and a number of guitar heroes past and present, featuring Ry Cooder, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. But I'm not here to promote his website. I'm here only to enlighten the fans of terrific and unique photo books and to urge you to consider adding this one to your collection. This is a wonderful book. The images are
printed on the highest quality paper available and they all deliver big time.
I've known and admired John Livzey's work for over 20 years. One of his most compelling--and enigmatic--images hangs in my office, frequently eliciting compliments from visitors seeing it for the first time. I've occasionally worked with him on projects for institutional clients and know him as the kind of photographer who always has a camera with him, whether he's on assignment, running errands or socializing with friends. This is a man who's in the right profession, as he clearly loves what he does, and he is a master of his craft, with an utterly original way of seeing the world. Viewing his environment through an artist's eyes, whether he's in South America, South Wales or Southern California, he produces image after stunning image that imprints itself in your brain. (To see what I mean, visit his Web site--which apparently won't let me give, but you can find it easily enough by googling his name--and look for the image of the Chrysler Building, under "Architecture," which has stuck in my mind ever since I first saw it a couple of years ago.)
That said, I approached Cruising for Snaps with a certain amount of trepidation. How could a photographer who's known for his distinctive work for the likes of National Geographic, Smithsonian and a host of other distinguished clients produce an entire book of snapshots taken through the windows of cars, trains and airplanes? How could they even approach the quality of his professional work?
From the first pages of the book, it was obvious that I needn't have been concerned. This is a book of remarkable images that capture the fleeting moments and unique juxtapositions surrounding us all but that most of us fail to notice. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes profound, always evocative, they zero in on the exceptional within the mundane, forming an impressionistic chronicle of life on the move, framed twice, as he says in his intro once through the window and again through his camera lens. Although Livzey is an Angeleno, with an LA native's ease with vehicles in motion, he has included photos from his far-ranging travels in the U.S., UK and Europe, proving over and over again that it isn't the equipment or even the location that makes memorable photographs; it's the photographer.
Cruising for Snaps is a beautifully produced book that would make a wonderful gift for any lover of fine photography or for yourself. I promise you'll browse it again and again, as I have, each time picking out a new favorite or seeing something new in an old one. I unhesitatingly give it five stars.
The premise for this book is really neat. These are impromptu photographs that were taken mostly out of the back windows of taxi cabs. These are the pictures taken, "on the way"--those stolen moments of nothingness that happen in the great in between times of our lives, that most of us miss. If it is true that the journey is the destination, then photographer John Livzey does a masterful job of delivering us there. These shots are Art, at it's finest, which makes it even more amazing that they were conceived, framed, and captured, in split seconds! Cruising for Snaps, features images from a variety of environments and geographies, from frenetic urban airports to lonely and desolate backroads. If you enjoy great photography with a twist (or know somebody who does) this collection of photographs is definitely worth purchasing for your collection.
