Stephen Mitchell doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere. He hates farming, although he must toil endless hours on the family’s failing farm. He’s not a scholar, for he never had any formal schooling. And he’s neither a husband nor lover, because he’s too self-conscious and awkward to speak to a young lady. But just when his future seems the bleakest, circumstances collide to put Stephen in the middle of a Chautauqua camp-meeting. For the first time in his life, Stephen is inspired to take one small step toward improving his future; and that single small step soon begets another.

When the Holy Spirit takes hold, there’s no end to the changes Stephen can make in his life—and no end to the influence he can have in the lives of others.

This unabridged edition of the 1893 classic Christian novel includes a biography of the author and additional bonus content.

Stephen Mitchel and his family didn't think they would ever be out of the grips of poverty and save their little farm. Then there was the closest neighbors for whom there was no help. They were drunkards. The new preacher and his sister Helen came with God to this small village and allow God to work a miracle through them for these people. Not only was this family's salvation secure, but their neighbor's family also. Surely God's Providence was written in this book. Isabella Alden was truly a great writer.
The hero in this book is only one of its intriguing characters--there's sly humor, convicting scempnarios, a few shockers, some truly poignant moments, and a heartfelt rallying cry to the powers of persistent, loving, relentless prayer. Loved this book from cover to cover!!
I was in tears in this book hearing the story of lives that seemed hopelessly blighted by bad choices for which there was nothing but apathy and limited opportunities. But as in all of Alden's books, redemption appears and life changes even those that seem the most hopeless. Her stories gave hope 100 years ago that change was possible even for those considered hopeless and they still provide that inspiration today. I consider this one of the most valuable books on my
I don't know when I have read a book that I enjoyed any more than I enjoyed this one. I adored Stephen's determination to educate himself and in the process better himself. His bettering himself had a domino effect and those around him, both family members and friends, were inspired to emulate him. I like all of Isabella Alden's books, just as I enjoy all of her niece Grace Livingston Hill's books, but this one might be an Alden standout. Highly recommend.
The synopsis for this story did not sound promising, but it was very well written and was truly an engaging story. Stephen, his sister, and his very poor neighbors (who suffer from the worst problems of poverty, including alcoholism, hunger, abuse, and visibly ragged lives) all transform in stages as God enters their lives with Stephen. A new pastor and his sister also find healing and friendship in their new home town.

I liked this book very much, but the connections between the characters never became more than friendly. I tend to like the books best where love of God and love of a husband or wife are part of the story.
