Well written with the word usage so rarely, if ever, seen in modern times. Onions has a grasp of words and storyline equal to Albert Payson Terhune. Spoiler alert: did not really realize this was a memoir of a murderer some years after a murder in storyline. As such, it made the story more of a shock than I had expected, though the murder itself was never listed a gore-ridden scene. A good read, Onions did extraordinarily with his words. Oh, to write in such a manner. Recommended read.

Oliver Onions is a great and unaccountably obscure English writer. He vividly conveys the settings of his stories, and his psychological grasp of his characters is acute and intense. He is also a master of the art of generating and sustaining suspense. This novel deserves wide readership.
The book was less of a whodunnit and more of a whyhedunnit so not much mystery. But, the psychological build up to when the murder occurred was extremely well done.

I still don't entirely understand what it was the victim suffered from. I gather it was some sort of illness, maybe syphilis, but I am not entirely sure and it left me most dissatisfied not knowing. If anyone knows, please let me know!
