Her first book, The Other Side of Heartsache, dealt with the pain and societal shame of illegitimate childbirth that existed many years ago. Entangled Loyalties deals with a more current and fairly common issue: The challenges involved in forming blended families.The story revolves around three women of three different generations: Annabelle (Annie), her stepmother Vivian, and Annie's stepdaughter Brooke, and is told from each woman's point of view. Each woman feels threatened by the relationships in her new "family", trying to find acceptance of the new situation without losing her place in her husband's or father's heart. Vivian faces up to a shattering tragedy from her passed and discovers a hidden inner strength; Annie is caught in the middle, unsure of to simultaneously be both a stepdaughter and stepmother and still hold on to her crumbling marriage; Brooke, Annie's stepdaughter, bitterly jealous of her father's love for Annie and their son, Riley, is struggling to deal with a devastating life-changing event that must remain a secret. This is a story about love, courage, loyalties and acceptance. Told thorough the voice of each woman, we gain an insight into each one's struggle.

I loved how the characters grew with forgiveness and their own emotional maturity. The Oregon background was woven in and reminded me of how much I love living here. I couldn't put the book down. It is a great read and highly recommend for anyone who is part of a blended family. I look forward to her next book. Great Job!
Once I got into this book, it wouldn't leave my mind. I couldn't read it at night because I would worry about the characters in my dreams! I really enjoyed the development of all three women, although Brooke was the weakest for me. Now I need a sequel to know what happens to each character.
Great story, very engaging, but the innumerable grammatical errors were very distracting and irritating. Needs some good proofreading, and it would be an excellent book!
A well thought out story filled with rich prose..the three women are well developed and draw the reader in with the conflict in each of their lives. I enjoyed this novel immensely and will think about these characters.
I could hardly put the book down - the story just kept moving at a very good pace and I couldn't wait to read what would happen next to each of the characters. Each of the three women involved have very different perspectives, and very interesting reasons for doing what they do. I loved the writing, I felt like I was looking in to each of their hearts as they told their stories. The story draws you in and holds your interest all the way through...I was sorry when it ended, I want to know what happens next to each of them.

After reading the author's debut novel, "The Other Side of Heartache," I wondered if her second book would measure up. I can assure you it did. It totally exceeded my expectations! In "Entangled Loyalties," Smith skillfully delves into the complex world of blended families, stepmothers and stepparents, as their lives overlap. In the beginning, each character is world's apart, with distinct and sharply crafted personalities. The author pulled me into their lives, early on, evoking very strong feelings! I found myself talking out loud to each of them, voicing my biased opinions. As Smith's talented writing continued, she began to reveal each character's complex backstory. My heart started warming towards each of them, with a new found sense of empathy. As the story progresses, each character travels down a path of redemption and grace, while Smith weaves their lives together, in the most skillful and heartfelt manor.
It was very evident the author put a great deal of time researching the topic of divorce, and the shift in paradigms that take place within a family. But one does not have to be in or have come from divorce to relate. If you are woman, on life's journey, Smith's newest read will leave you with a sense of hope and gratitude. She reveals that when one is transparent with our feelings and life's traumas, one's heart can change in the most dramatic and compelling of ways!
