H.H. Holmes The Devil in Me, based on the true events of H.H. Holmes. Following events from his early childhood, to a student at University of Michigan Medical School, Holmes developed a taste for murder and the macabre. Mistreated in his childhood, Holmes quickly transformed into a cunning and ruthless conman and killer. Drawing on his deception and disregard for human life, Holmes frequently travelled and became involved in devious insurance scams. He perfected these insurance scams by becoming the beneficiary on the policies, murdered the policy holder and claimed they died in an accident and collected the insurance pay outs. With enough money from his fraudulent scams Holmes settled in Chicago and begin the design of an elaborate hotel and an even more horrific scheme in mind. There are even connections between Jack "The Ripper" and H.H. Holmes. After constructing and opening his hotel, during the Chicago World Fair, he began luring unsuspecting victims and murdering them by asphyxiation by pumping gas into his guest's private rooms. Disposing of their bodies became the true signature for which he became notorious. The basement of the "Murder Castle" was equipped with torture devices, large acid vats, lye pits, and furnaces large enough to cremate human remains. However, Holmes took the disposal of bodies to a new level, stripping the flesh and selling the skeletons of his victims to medical schools. After his capture, authorities discovered Holmes' "Murder Castle", where it is believed he slaughtered more than two hundred victims. H.H. Holmes is known to be one of the most notorious and vicious mass murderers of all time!

I read some of the other reviews before getting this one and it seems there are some mixed feelings about it. i thought it was an interesting blend of styles the writer had used to put together his story. i have to admit that i do not know the story of Herman Mudgett but this came across as part biographical, part textbook and part fiction. I got the feeling there was a good element of fact about it but the story itself might have been tinged with fiction to suit the purposes of the tale. Fiction is fiction so i do not see anything bad in that.
I noticed part of the story seemed to go into some depth in what looked like textbook psychology explanations which is fine by me as i had taken some psychology in college and followed it fairly well. i think the purpose of doing this was to show that the point of the story may have been the road to the madness rather than dealing with the madness. i see in this that Herman made the attempt to fit in with normal life knowing full well he wasnt going to make it. it lent the story the effect of having him hover on the brink of his insanity for a good while before he delved headlong into the evil acts he committed.
ultimately the whole thing came together fairly well in the end and the pace quickened to the finish which was a nice counterpoint to some of the lengthy textbook style explanations embedded in the story. a slow build up to a pacey end. i think it is enough to make me want to read more of his work

HH Holmes The Devil In Me Colby Van Wagoner Books Reviews

One word, wow! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was not acquainted with the story of H.H> Holmes prior to reading this book. So his actions came as an even larger shock to me upon reading. Like many people I have an interest in the psyche of a serial killer, and the author delivers on this point for sure. It never ceases to amaze the actions some people are capable of committing. I will recommend this book to friends and family. Whether you are well versed in Holmes' "House of Horrors" or you find yourself like me, you should definitely read this book.
PLASTIC WRAP in the 1800's????? BOWLING BAGS????? Entire pages exerpted from brochures and other source documents simply to fill pages with useless trivia?????

Authentic dialogue????? Scene jumping and skipping?????
The writer needs to hang his/her head in shame at this sorry excuse for a novel.

Had there been a "minus five stars" option, I would have checked it. The "work" is a complete waste of time and cyberspace, not to mention money.
A one star rating is one too many. Holmes was a mass murderer and his deeds and actions were gruesome - but that isn't what makes Mulberry Lane an atrocious mess.

Not only is this poorly written, it is extremely short. It feels as is from the initial point of "research" to writing the entire manuscript to publishing might have taken the better part of a day. Clearly there was little or no time to edit this work.

Two prior reviewers rated this work as five stars - but take note that one of those is by the author, Van Wagoner. Caveat emptor certainly seems appropriate.

At $0.99, $9.00 less than the version, this work would be overpriced.
If you like sleeping with the lights on, this is the book for you.
Don't read it in the dark!
I love cheesy 80's slasher movies. Senseless blood and gore sometimes provide for good entertainment. Of course, when I buy a book that I think is more of a biography, the senseless blood and guts storyline is not my expectation. However, that aspect of Mulberry Lane proved to be the best thing about it...and that's not saying much.

First, this is not a biography or historical study. It is historical fiction, written as a novel. And I use the word "written" in the most literal sense. Mulberry Lane is most definitely not finely crafted literature. The sentences are short, full of "he did this" followed by "he did that" and just plunked down on the page one after the other. The events skip from one to the next with little detail and no pace. Even worse, consecutive sentences are frequently redundant or even contradictory.

On top of the shortcomings in the writing itself, the editing is ATROCIOUS. The formatting for the is poor. But worse still, the author uses a comma before the word "and" almost every time. He has no clue how to use apostrophes. Typos abound. And inconsistencies are not uncommon either, including one page that refers to a character as Holden, while the subsequent pages refer to him as Holton.

Mulberry Lane essentially reads like a poorly edited 8th grade creative writing project. If you want some blood and guts and don't mind ignoring the mindless pigsty of it all, go for it. If you can get it for 99 cents instead of $9.99, as I paid, you'll be getting a much better value.
A great read and great history of Chicago and World's Fair.
